\/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>What if we are confronted with unfamiliar smellscapes in our homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces and cities? <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the cultural conditioning of the senses, the smellscapes of everyday life (in homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces and cities) play an important part ineveryday experiences, emotions and encounters. Increased global mobility and climate change mean that unfamiliar smells are met more frequently, integrating with and altering the taken-for-granted smellscapes of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>How do people of different cultures negotiate unfamiliar smells in a variety of settings? What emotions do scents \u2018in and out of place\u2019 evoke? What memories, knowledge and moral judgements are used to understand smells? What vocabulary is used to describe these experiences?<\/p>\n<p>Everyday materialities are visible and invisible. Our visible research artefact (the charm bracelet) produces invisible research artefacts (the smells). Controlled remotely by an app, the smells enter different spaces and social contexts, at different times, for different durations. Yet, it is one of our most taken-for-granted resources. Humans cannot sense electricity; to compensate, our research artefact interacts with the electricity we use in our homes every day.<\/p>\n<p>The Electricity Thief \u2018travels\u2019 around the home, rubbing against surfaces, and \u2018grows\u2019 slowly by converting ambient electricity into movement and inflation. Following this concept, we pose the question: what if clothing had alternative, planned configurations during use, rather than degrading?<\/p>\n<p>This inquiry is embedded in a garment that transforms in contact with water, sunlight and friction (use). Water dissolves the supporting structure of the embroidery, revealing the underlying fabric and the dynamic expressions of the embroidered lines, which change from straight and static to organic and dynamic. Sunlight changes the colour of these lines. Humans have difficulty in communicating face to face and so need an aid to communication. Climate change makes migration more probable, so we set out to explore communication between strangers, and the struggle for democracy and inclusion in an increasingly polarised world.<\/p>\n<p>The tool will mimic the old school communication of smart phones as it may be a similar size. The device has the possibility of its users developing a new language. It could be used as a conversation piece, a starter of conversations or to begin a game between a group of people, each altering the arrangement of elastic bands on the cog as it was passed around. This is linked to mental health, which is a complex thing. One of the most occurring problems is anxiety (closely linked to stress). This can be detected with heart-rate sensors and EDA sensors. But detecting stress alone is not enough, we need a solution. That is why we came up with the concept of \u2018artificial hug\u2019. This is a comforting soft sensor artefact that serves several purposes: it detects anxious states of an individual; provides neurofeedback; and, offers a way to reduce anxiety, by engaging a \u201chug\u201d mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>But, what is a human hug? What makes it good? Is it the same for everyone? The Breathing Mirror makes this visible through light. LEDs around the edge of the mirror light up becoming brighter and dimmer in a way that suggests breathing. The rhythm of this change varies according to the level of pollution (for example, CO2 or particulate matter) that is measured in the home. The mirror not only interacts with this virtual data, but it also interacts with the physical environment. It is coated in a material that accumulates dust from the environment.
