The project concerns the issues of climate change vulnerability, resilience, risk management and adaptation in selected African cities with local case study partners. It was a three year project (2010-2013) sponsored by EU FP7. It focused on the improvement of the capacity of scientific institutions, local councils and civil society to cope with climate change.
The overall objective was to develop methods and knowledge to be applied to African cities to manage climate risks, to reduce vulnerabilities and to improve their coping capacity and resilience towards climate changes.
It was implemented through six interconnected Work Packages (WPs), each comprising a number of tasks. It was a collaborative project involving 13 EU and African institutions, including two of the EcoPoor collaborators – University of Manchester and Ardhi University. The EcoPoor project particularly draws on WP2 Task 2.2, which had the following three objectives:
- To analyse, quantify and map important ecosystem services of the urban green structure that increase the resilience of African cities to climate change;
- To assess the impacts of climate change on urban green structure & its ecosystem services;
- To evaluate the prospects for urban green structure as a measure for adapting African cities to climate change
