A\u00a0conference at Penshurst Place\u00a0 8<\/strong>-9 June 2014<\/strong><\/h1>\n

This conference, held at Penshurst Place, and featuring a Globe\u00a0Education ‘Read not Dead’ staged reading\u00a0of Lady Mary Wroth\u2019s Love\u2019s Victory, <\/em>offers a unique opportunity to explore<\/strong> how site and writing connect in the work of the Sidney-Herbert family. \u00a0How does the architecture of the great house, the gardens and the estate function as a symbolic site of community for this literary coterie? How, in turn, do the plays, poems, letters and stories recreate the site, dramatizing it in fictive scenes?<\/h1>\n

The conference will explore how Penshurst Place operates as a repository of memories and tradition and simultaneously as a place of literary innovation (in sonnet sequences, lyrics, female-authored drama and pastoral romance.)<\/p>\n

It will feature talks by literary scholars including: Professors Michael Brennan, Margaret Hannay and Mary Ellen Lamb, Alison Findlay, Paul Salzman, Akiko Kusunoki, Naomi Miller, Ilona D. Bell,\u00a0Katie Larson, and architectural historian of Penshurst Place, Dr Susie West.<\/p>\n

In addition to sharing ideas through papers and discussion, delegates will be invited to comment on the\u00a0performance\u00a0with the\u00a0aim of\u00a0moving planning a full on-site production in the future.<\/p>\n

Bursaries<\/a> A limited number of bursaries to support conference attendance by postgraduate students will be available, thanks to generous funding by the Society for Renaissance Studies.<\/p>\n
