Working with sand<\/p><\/div>\n

It\u2019s not easy for people who have never been flooded to understand what it is like. It’s even difficult for people who have<\/em> been flooded to convey what they have gone through.<\/p>\n

We started sharing about what happened\u00a0by using\u00a03D art to create models of the flood experiences. A\u00a0great\u00a0way to start 3D art work is with sand –\u00a0the medium of sand is a simple playful means to connect with expressing ideas and memories using tactile materials.<\/p>\n

Choosing materials for group model<\/p><\/div>\n

Working with sand then led to thinking about how to express parts of the story in more complex 3D. The children used\u00a0a range of\u00a0natural and art materials (from clay, sticks and moss to wool, textiles and buttons)\u00a0to show what happened and how the flood still affects them.\u00a0They then worked together to\u00a0make larger group models about the recovery process.<\/p>\n

Here a model has started to take shape.\u00a0Once completed\u00a0the children\u00a0shared what\u00a0they had made with others in\u00a0their group, naming the different\u00a0parts of the models, and talking about\u00a0what each feature meant. Then\u00a0they visited other groups\u2019 models and did the same. It\u2019s interesting how in the larger group models everyone chose different aspects of the flood and the recovery process.<\/p>\n

Next\u00a0the children and young people\u00a0worked out how to \u2018translate\u2019 these modelled experiences\u00a0into key messages for decision makers.<\/p>\n
