He was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour a year ago, shortly after he and his wife, Kathy, moved away from Cumbria to Stratford. Chris was a member of the department for around forty years, initially joining the then Department of Computer Studies as a Research Associate in 1969-70; then moving on to a Lectureship and retiring in 2009. Chris was acting Head of Department in 1977-78 and head of department 1979-82. His main research contributions were in the area of Information Retrieval and in particular on stemming, anaphor resolution and automatic abstracting. Many of us remember Chris fondly as a kind academic and a gentleman, welcoming to new staff, generous with his advice and gentle with his criticism, putting his time and energy into nurturing and encouraging students, and teaching via the blackboard.

26th April 2016
Jon Whittle
Head of School
School of Computing and Communications
Lancaster University

I am sorry to pass on the sad news that Chris Paice passed away last week.
