{"id":63,"date":"2016-08-11T14:30:30","date_gmt":"2016-08-11T14:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/beyondlec\/?p=63"},"modified":"2019-08-07T14:02:27","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T14:02:27","slug":"amy-valach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/beyondlec\/2016\/08\/11\/amy-valach\/","title":{"rendered":"Amy Valach (British Antarctic Survey)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Name:<\/strong> Amy Valach<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Subject:<\/strong>\u00a0PhD Atmospheric Sciences (Thesis:<em>Volatile organic compound fluxes and\u00a0<\/em><em>mixing ratios in two contrasting atmospheric environments:\u00a0<\/em><em>London and the Amazon rainforest<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Year Graduated:<\/strong> 2015<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>College:<\/strong> Graduate<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Where are you now and what are you doing?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I\u2019m currently working as an Atmospheric Scientist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/polar-operations\/sites-and-facilities\/facility\/halley\/https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/polar-operations\/sites-and-facilities\/facility\/halley\/\">Halley Research Station<\/a> in Antarctica for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bas.ac.uk\/\">British Antarctic Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>What would you like to do next?<br \/>\n<\/strong>After enjoying some time travelling I would like to work on projects involving polar greenhouse and trace gas exchanges from the biosphere to the atmosphere and how these interact with climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Lancaster Environment Centre offers top teaching and research opportunities in environmental sciences in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>What was your favourite part of your degree and why?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The many chances to work on collaborative projects, field work and\u00a0attend summer schools and conferences, as they integrate your\u00a0research into the greater picture and introduce you to the academic\u00a0community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you\u2019re currently doing?<br \/>\n<\/strong>I learnt a wide range of skills from writing\/presenting papers to independently maintaining scientific equipment, as well as confidence to solve complex problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?
