{"id":1266,"date":"2017-03-30T16:00:06","date_gmt":"2017-03-30T16:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/beyondlec\/?p=1266"},"modified":"2019-08-09T15:41:28","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T15:41:28","slug":"sarah-shallcross-phd-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.lancs.ac.uk\/beyondlec\/2017\/03\/30\/sarah-shallcross-phd-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Shallcross (PhD student)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Name:<\/strong> Sarah Shallcross<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subject:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/postgraduate-courses\/volcanology-and-geological-hazards-msc\/#overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSc Volcanology and Geological Hazards<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Year Graduated:<\/strong> 2015<\/p>\n<p><strong>College:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/colleges\/graduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graduate<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you now and what are you doing?<\/strong><br \/>\nI am currently at the end of my first year of my PhD at the University of Leeds.\u00a0 My PhD is looking at the climate effects of volcanic ash and past volcanic eruptions using atmospheric modelling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would you like to do next?<\/strong><br \/>\nMy dream is to work in a volcanic observatory, but anything where I can use the skills from my degrees and hopefully visit and\/or research some volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you choose to study at Lancaster?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve been interested in volcanoes since I was young, but never thought I\u2019d get the opportunity to actually study them.\u00a0 Lancaster gave me the opportunity to do that whilst visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/lec\/undergraduate\/geography\/fieldwork\/volcanic-processes-mount-etna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Etna<\/a> and also studying other environmental modules which appealed to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was your favourite part of your degree and why?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/lec\/undergraduate\/geography\/fieldwork\/volcanic-processes-mount-etna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Etna fieldtrip<\/a> has to be my favourite part.\u00a0 It\u2019s not every day you get to visit an active volcano covered in snow with specialist volcanologists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you think your time at Lancaster prepared you for what you\u2019re currently doing?<\/strong><br \/>\nStudying at Lancaster gave me an appreciation for the hard work, determination and time management required to do good and noteworthy research.\u00a0 I also gained some good background knowledge for the subject of my PhD and learned how to write and present in a more academic way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did you enjoy most about your time at Lancaster?<\/strong><br \/>\nI enjoyed meeting the volcanologists within Lancaster University, the challenge of my Masters and Lancaster as a place is a lovely place to live.\u00a0 Lancaster is also the place I started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lumc.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rock climbing<\/a> which is now my main extra-curricular activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to current students?<\/strong><br \/>\nEnjoy your time at University as much as you can.\u00a0 Enjoy the freedom and the extra-curricular as well as academic opportunities.\u00a0 Most importantly, don\u2019t stress and don\u2019t compare yourself to others.\u00a0 Everything can be resolved in one way or another, whether it\u2019s personal or academic and everyone is different which is what makes life exciting!
